HDR Network
SUPRA’s HDR Network is a community for all postgraduate research students at the University of Sydney, including master’s by research, Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates. The network aims to create a supportive environment where students can connect with peers across faculties, share experiences, and build a sense of community throughout their research journey.
Research degrees can often feel isolating, with students facing unique challenges such as supervision, milestones, academic pressure and work-life balance. The network hosts a range of activities such as social gatherings, interdisciplinary seminars, and collaborations with University services and student groups. It also serves as a platform to gather feedback on HDR student experiences and advocate for improvements to research student life.
HDR Officer – Vivian Bai
The Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Officer is responsible for representing HDR students and advocating on their behalf, especially with regards to students from diverse and marginalised backgrounds.
Hello, I’m Vivian, a PhD student at Usyd. I first joined SUPRA as a volunteer and have served as a councillor for over 3 years, including as President during the 2024–25 term. My work during this term is focused on enhancing the experience of HDR students. Outside of my studies and advocacy work, I enjoy practising martial arts, skiing and travelling.

If you have any queries about the HDR Network or would like to raise some issues, please contact SUPRA’s HDR Officer: hdr@supra.usyd.edu.au.
