Exhibition: 100 years of global connections

In 2023, SUPRA and the University of Sydney will celebrate 100 years of welcoming international students to the University of Sydney, recognising their contributions to the University.

Call out for creative works and projects

As part of the celebrations, we will be curating an exhibition to highlight 100 years of global connections. We are seeking creative artworks and innovative ideas to be featured in this exhibition, to be held in October and November 2023.

Exhibition theme: ‘International students at the University of Sydney’. All artworks that address this theme will be considered.

Applications are divided into 2 streams:

  • Stream A: existing artworks
  • Stream B: new artworks.

Eligibility:

  • All currently enrolled students at the University of Sydney are eligible to enter both streams.
  • Alumni of the University of Sydney are eligible to submit artworks to Stream A.
  • Students can submit proposals for Stream B as individuals or as a group.
  • Any eligible artist may enter both streams once only.

Successful applications will receive financial compensation which will differ depending on whether they have applied for Stream A or Stream B. Please see below for further information.

How to enter

Artists are highly encouraged to attend the information sessions and familiarise themselves with the site and target community to develop an artwork proposal suitable to the location.

Stream A – existing artworks

The exhibition is seeking existing artworks that celebrate or showcase international students at the University. The artworks will be exhibited in a gallery space within the University. The exhibition team will support the artists in placement and installation of the artworks.

2D work requirements:

  • Artwork must be wired and ready to hang on a standard gallery wire hanging system. No sawtooth hangers.
  • Maximum overall size of artwork is limited to 61 x 76 cm (24 x 30 inches) not including frame. The minimum size is 20 x 25 cm (8 x 10 inches) not including frame.

3D work requirements:

  • Three-dimensional work may not exceed 30 cm (11.81 inches) in any direction.
  • Three-dimensional work may not exceed 8 kg.

Stream B – new artworks

The artists will be responsible for creating an artwork that will be exhibited in a gallery space within the University.

The art proposal should meet the following criteria:

 

  • Relevancy to the theme – the proposal should provide a clear description as to how the artwork will meet the exhibition theme.
  • Feasibility – the proposal should include a strong project plan that shows how the project will be delivered on time and within budget.
  • Artistic merit – applicants should demonstrate artistic ability by providing examples of previous work.

Submission process

Stream A

To submit your existing artwork for exhibition, please follow these steps:

1. Prepare images of your artwork. Maximum file size is 10 MB and must be in .jpg or .png format.

  • For 2D works, only 1 image per entry.
  • For 3D works, up to 3 images per entry are required.

2. Include a brief description of your artwork, including the title, medium, and dimensions.

3. Submit your artwork through the entry form.

The submission deadline for existing artworks is 5pm, Friday 16 June 2023. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Successful applicants will be awarded a voucher to the value of $250 to show appreciation for their contribution.

SSubmissions will be reviewed by the selection committee on Friday 23 June 2023. Successful applicants will be notified from Wednesday 28 June 2023, and will be provided further instructions on the next steps.

All accepted artworks will be returned to the artist after the conclusion of the exhibition.

    Stream B

    To submit a proposal to create a new art project, please follow these steps:

    1. Review the project guidelines and eligibility criteria carefully to ensure your project is a good fit.

    2. Prepare a written proposal outlining your project idea and how it aligns with the theme, your project budget, and timeline. Upload your proposal as a Word document. Maximum file size 10 MB.

    3. Include links to examples of previous work. You may also attach images of previous work if necessary. Maximum file size is 10 MB and must be in .jpg or .png format.

    4. Submit your application through the entry form.

    The submission deadline is 5pm, Friday 16 June 2023. Late submissions will not be accepted.

    Submissions will be reviewed by the selection committee on Friday 23 June 2023. Successful applicants will be notified from Wednesday 28 June 2023, and will be provided further instructions on the next steps.

    Successful applicants will receive a grant of up to $1000 to assist in the purchase of goods and services to produce their artwork. Please note that this will not involve a lump sum transfer into your or your group’s account.

    All accepted artworks will be returned to the artist after the conclusion of the exhibition.
