SUPRA Council – committees
The standing Executive Committees are:
- Management Committee
- Policy Committee.
The standing Working Committees are:
- Policy Committee
- Education Committee
- Publications and Media Committee
- Community Engagement and Activities Committee
- Equity Committee.
Committee meetings are convened and chaired by one of the office-bearers and any interested SUPRA members are welcome to participate. We especially appreciate any suggestions or input you may have about matters that impact on your study conditions. If you’d like to attend a committee meeting please contact the chair of that committee.
All SUPRA members have voting rights at meetings of the standing Working Committees. Voting rights at meetings of the Standing Executive Committees (Management Committee and Policy Committee) are reserved for elected members.
It should also be noted that the President, the Secretary, and the chairing office-bearer are ex officio members of these committees, meaning they are members by virtue of their office.
The SUPRA Constitution outlines Terms of Reference for each of the standing committees. Executive Committees have minutes of their meetings recorded and presented to Council; Working Committees have decisions and actions recorded and presented to Council.
Management Committee
The Management Committee is responsible for staffing, administration, finances and infrastructure as well as internal policy and regulations between Council meetings. It ensures the smooth running of SUPRA’s day-to-day and strategic operations. If you have any enquiries about the Management Committee, please contact secretary@supra.usyd.edu.au.
Finance Committee
The Finance Committee meets at least once a quarter and is responsible for economic modelling, budget planning and scheduling, quarterly reviews of the budget, and preparation of the draft annual budget. Policy Committee
The Policy Committee has the task of analysing postgraduate policy issues and advising SUPRA Council. It reviews and comments on issues arising across the University and oversees campaigns and lobbying on higher education; equity, social, cultural and political issues; and the needs of postgraduate students at the University of Sydney. Education Committee
The Education Committee meets at least once every two months and its main role is to organise and run campaigns that benefit the postgraduate community of the University of Sydney. This has included campaigns for international student travel concessions and against the University of Sydney restructure. Education Committee is chaired by the Education Officer and any University of Sydney postgraduate student can attend meetings. Publications and Media Committee
The Publications and Media Committee is in charge of the production of publications, communications and information for SUPRA and is there to help develop mechanisms for improved postgraduate student contact. If you have any enquiries about SUPRA’s publications or would like to join the Publications and Media Committee, please contact publications@supra.usyd.edu.au.
Community Engagement and Activities Committee
The Community Engagement and Activities Committee meets at least once every two months and is responsible for planning and running social events for postgraduates. The postgraduate community is more likely to feel isolated on campus and this committee works to provide opportunities for socialising and networking. Events have included walks, coffee afternoons, the Postgraduate Ball and end-of-semester parties. The committee is usually chaired by the Vice-President or the Education Officer and any University of Sydney postgraduate student can attend meetings. Equity Committee
The Equity Committee is responsible for reviewing and planning events across the Equity Networks. You can learn more about our Equity Networks here.
Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Committee
The HDR Committee is dedicated to advocating for and supporting Higher Degree Research (HDR) students across the University of Sydney. Chaired by the HDR Officer and including members from all faculties, the committee convenes at least once every 2 months to address the unique academic and professional needs of HDR students. It spearheads initiatives to improve research education policies, enhance student support, and foster a collaborative research community. All HDR students at the University of Sydney are welcome to attend meetings and contribute to these efforts.
