SUPRA Women’s Network would like to provide the following update on recent campus lighting improvements, in response to concerns raised by students in 2024.
Following reports of inadequate campus lighting, particularly in areas affecting nighttime safety, SUPRA actively communicated these concerns to the University’s Protective Services. As a result of this advocacy, the University conducted lighting assessments across the Camperdown, Darlington, and Camden campuses, including on-site inspections and technical reviews. Lighting issues at 8 locations have since been resolved.
SUPRA has also been informed that the University is establishing a regular inspection process to support the ongoing maintenance of lighting infrastructure. We appreciate the efforts of Protective Services and facilities teams in responding to these concerns.
As part of our commitment to students’ safety, SUPRA has created a new article for the SUPRA website: Navigating campus safely. This resource offers clear information on emergency help, transport options, reporting procedures, and key safety contacts. We invite you to explore the information, which offers practical guidance for managing safety concerns during your time on campus.
These improvements were made possible through the strong support of the Women’s Network. We sincerely thank all members for your ongoing engagement and commitment to creating a safer campus environment.
If you have thoughts or feedback related to campus safety, we welcome you to stay connected with the Women’s Network by contacting Yiman at women@supra.usyd.edu.au, or contact SUPRA.
