Saturday 11 October is International Coming Out Day – a day to support and acknowledge anyone ‘coming out of the closet’ and sharing their sexuality or gender identity. While ‘coming out’ is an important and powerful act for some, others might prefer to invite particular people in to this part of ourselves.
The concept of ‘coming out’ has its roots in industrial action and worker power, with teachers and school staff coming out en masse, in solidarity with people who had been fired for being gay.
At the University of Sydney, there are staunch and powerful organisations of LGBTQIA+ students and staff taking collective action:
- SUPRA Queer Network – a network of LGBTQIA+ postgraduate students at the University of Sydney. Together they organise regular social events, and respond to issues emerging for queer students on campus.
- Queer Unionists in Tertiary Education – a group of LGBTQI+ members of the NTEU. Collectively, members at the Usyd branch have organised around gender affirmation and transition leave, supporting queer students taking action for Gaza, and much more.
- Usyd Pride Network – a network of Usyd staff and students who challenge bigotry and amplify voices of LGBTQIA+ staff and students.
