This event was a cultural workshop titled ‘Art on the Fan: A Cultural Journey through Chinese Calligraphy and Craft’. The focus of the workshop was to introduce participants to traditional Chinese culture through the mediums of Chinese calligraphy and fan making.
There were 14 attendees from diverse backgrounds, interested in Chinese culture, art and crafts. Participants learned the ancient art of lacquer fan making, a tradition that dates back over 8,000 years. They also explored Chinese calligraphy, understanding that each brushstroke carries energy, balance, strength, and grace. The fans created during the event are unique artworks symbolising elegance and grace, as depicted in the Tang dynasty.
The event was a successful cultural exchange, offering a meaningful experience of Chinese arts. It not only celebrated the beauty of lacquer fan making and calligraphy but also fostered a sense of connection among the participants, all while showcasing the elegance of an ancient tradition.
