SUPRA sends support and condolences regarding Bondi shooting
SUPRA is horrified and angered by the abhorrent act of mass violence that occurred at Bondi Beach yesterday.
We are mourning the 15 lives taken last night, and our thoughts are with their loved ones. Our thoughts are also with the dozens of people injured, most of whom are still in hospital, many in critical condition. We wish a speedy recovery to all.
The shooting took place as Sydneysiders gathered at the beach to mark the first night of Chanukah. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. Every person should be free to live and gather on this land without fear of violence of any kind, regardless of their race, faith, or beliefs.
We are incredibly grateful for all of the people who stepped forward last night to look after and protect each other. There are countless stories of bravery and selflessness during a terrifying time.
For all students feeling less safe moving around Sydney today, SUPRA stands with you. Whether you’re an international student or a local student – this is your home, and you are entitled to safety. We encourage our SUPRA community to reach out to each other and take care of each other. Chanukah represents the triumph of light over darkness. By taking care of each other, and by refusing to be turned against each other, we can be that light.
SUPRA encourages postgrad students to prioritise their wellbeing during this time. If you’re feeling distressed, unsafe, or overwhelmed, support is available. The University has increased security on campus, but they have also expressed understanding that many might not feel safe to come on to campus at this time.
The University has also made it clear that anyone affected by this violence – especially those who still have replacement exams to sit – should apply for special consideration and it will be treated favourably. If you want assistance with a special consideration application, contact a SUPRA caseworker for help.
For HDR students who are affected, remember you have leave entitlements that you might want to use at this time. Find out more about your leave entitlements.
