SUPRA condemns the disrespectful and provocative conduct by members of the Usyd Liberals towards the SRC Women’s Officers and their report of concerns of sexual assault at Usyd residential colleges during a meeting of Representatives-Elect of the 97th Student Representative Council (SRC) on 30 October 2024. SUPRA stands in solidarity with the SRC Women’s Officers and survivors of sexual assault and harassment.
As reported by Honi Soit on 31 October, at the meeting the women’s officers drew upon documented evidence from the 2018 Red Zone Report and the Broderick Report. However, members of Usyd Liberals responded by tearing up copies of the Red Zone report and apparently deriding the report and issues and shouting, ‘No one cares.’
These actions constitute conduct unbefitting of student representatives and demonstrate an apparent disregard for issues that significantly impact student welfare. They do not reflect the values or professionalism expected of or within the student representation community.
SUPRA calls on the SRC to censure those members responsible for the conduct. We also call on the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Joanne Wright to take action in response to this behaviour in line with The University of Sydney’s Student Code of Conduct.
SUPRA is committed to advocating for campus safety and invites all students to join in building a more inclusive and respectful environment at the University of Sydney.
