Share your feedback on proposed changes to special consideration

The University is reviewing its special consideration policies and SUPRA wants your feedback on the proposed changes. We will be meeting with the University to request more information, and to share your feedback.

SUPRA will not agree with any changes to special consideration that further disadvantage students.

Please let us know your thoughts on the 3 proposals below, and leave comments where you can – including whether you find the proposal confusing or unclear.

1. Proposed change to additional documentation timeline

Currently, when an application for special consideration requires additional information or supporting evidence (such as a medical or other health practitioner letter), the student must provide this documentation within 10 business days. The application will be closed if the requested information is not provided within 10 business days.

Proposed change: to reduce the time to provide additional documentation from 10 to 4 business days.

2. Proposed change to second replacement assessments

Currently, the University has 2 replacement exam periods: replacement exam period 1 (RE1) and replacement exam period 2 (RE2). When a student is unable to complete a replacement exam during RE1, they can apply for special consideration again. If special consideration is approved, they can sit a replacement exam during RE2. All replacement exams are organised by the Exams Team, not the faculties.

Proposed change: the University removes RE2 and the faculties organise all second replacement assessments. These would be secure assessments, for example, a supervised task, such as an in-person exam or oral exam. This could mean:

  • assessments take place earlier than the current RE2 period
  • assessments take place later than the current RE2 period
  • the faculties decide the type of secure assessment, for example: invigilated exam, oral assessment etc.
  • students are treated differently in different faculties.

3. Proposed change to rules if becoming unwell during an exam

Currently, a student who sits an exam is presumed to be fit to do so. A student who sits an exam and completes it is eligible to apply for special consideration within 3 days, if they can provide evidence that they became unwell during the exam.

Proposed change: a student who sits an exam is presumed fit to do so. If a student becomes unwell during the exam, they should stop, report to the invigilator, and apply for special consideration with supporting documentation within 3 days.

A student who completes an exam will only be eligible to apply for special consideration if their ability to decide whether to stop or continue the exam was negatively affected. They will also need to provide evidence of this, such as a medical certificate. Reasons could include health or other personal circumstances.
