If you want to leave your housing before the end of your contract, it’s important to know what type of housing agreement you have (a tenancy or an occupancy) – this determines what your rights are. Be aware: your landlord may have included clauses in your contract that aren’t lawful.
Ending your arrangement early can trigger fees and charges, usually called a ‘break lease fee’. However, termination fees should be reasonable – you should not be required to pay the rest of your remaining term.
If you’re being asked to pay a fee that doesn’t seem fair, contact our casework service for help.
