The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) recently conducted a review of the Opal fare structure, including concession fares.

Education Officer and Fair Fares Campaign Coordinator, Weihong Liang, attended a public hearing and advocated strongly for all students to have access to concession fares, drawing particular attention to students who are forced to commute due to placements, and to the fact that increased rents results in students living further away from university campuses.

Weihong Liang and SUPRA caseworker Jet Hunt prepared a written submission to IPART [PDF 592KB] containing the history of the struggle for travel concession parity.

IPART have now completed their report, and the recommendation that all students receive concession fares is heavily featured!

This is a real win for the Fair Fares campaign – congratulations to all students who have contributed to this campaign and have been working so tirelessly for concessions for all students.

The next step will be to campaign for the NSW Government to adopt IPART’s recommendation.

We encourage any student who would like to participate in the campaign for fair fares to contact SUPRA Education Officer Weihong Liang at education@supra.usyd.edu.au
