SUPRA condemns violence and harassment against international students in Sydney. Our community was shocked by the violent assault against a Chinese couple in Eastgardens last week. NSW Police treated the matter seriously and have made 7 arrests.
Film of the incident spread on social media, which resulted in an outpouring of support among Chinese students in Sydney, but also outrage and anxiety over their safety. SUPRA is working with student groups and the University of Sydney to respond to these attacks and to support international students at Usyd to feel safe.
There are a range of support options available if you are unsafe or fear for your safety. For your or someone else’s safety, contact:
- Campus Protective Services on 02 9351 3333
- NSW Police on 000
- University Student Wellbeing on 02 8627 8433. Outside of business hours this number will connect you with the Student Mental Wellbeing Support Line.
Making a report to police or the University will not impact your student visa.
If you’re a postgrad student who needs advocacy, advice or support contact SUPRA for help.
