In memory of Kade F – a member of Usyd’s Diversity and Inclusion team and Pride Network
It’s hard to put into words what Kade meant to us. They weren’t just a colleague – they were a friend. Kade worked with SUPRA at every opportunity, which was something we found truly special for a Usyd staff member. They embraced their role wholeheartedly, and it was a privilege to work alongside them in so many capacities.
From the start, Kade made me (Gemma) feel welcome and at home within Sydney’s equity and diversity community. Their commitment to community care was remarkable, extending not only to me but to countless others across the disability, LGBTQI+, and First Nations communities on campus. Kade had this way of making everyone feel seen and supported, whether through a conversation over coffee or a big event. Their warmth, sense of humour, and willingness to speak their mind always made time spent with them a joy. They never hesitated to share a yarn, no matter how busy they were.
Working closely together with Daniel Smith, Kade was one of the key players in bringing the University of Sydney on board with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative. We ran training sessions together and grew close during that time. It’s something that has already made a tangible difference in the lives of disabled students and will continue to do so – a lasting legacy that Kade helped build.
In the LGBTQI+ space, Kade was fierce. Especially on trans issues, they were a tireless and unapologetic advocate for change on campus. As a staff contact for the LGBTQI+ community, they handled difficult questions with grace and confidence. It was incredible to see how open and effective they were in their advocacy, never shying away from the hard conversations. They made a real impact, and their dedication to making this university a better, safer place for everyone won’t be forgotten.
Kade was also a fellow postgraduate, and though they weren’t studying at Usyd, they were part of our broader community. Their passion for making higher education more inclusive for all was clear in everything they did, and their work touched so many people within and beyond the University.
We will miss Kade deeply. Their loss is felt not just by us but by so many in the communities they cared for so deeply.
With love and solidarity,
Gemma Lucy Smart (SUPRA Disability Officer) & Haolong Liao (SUPRA Queer Officer)
