As SUPRA’s Queer Officer and Disabilities Officer, we are thrilled to come together to celebrate the 47th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. We extend our warmest greetings and deepest respect to everyone participating in this vibrant occasion. This annual festival is far more than just a parade – it stands as a powerful testament to our community’s resilience, diversity, and unwavering spirit.
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras carries a rich history, dating back to its courageous beginnings in 1978. On a cold winter’s night, the first march took place as an act of protest against discrimination and police harassment. Organised by the Gay Solidarity Group, it sought to raise awareness of critical local issues, including the decriminalisation of homosexuality, to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York, and to protest the visit of homophobic campaigner Mary Whitehouse. What began as a demonstration of defiance has since evolved into one of the world’s largest and most renowned LGBTQIA+ festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe.
Today, the Mardi Gras festival is a grand celebration featuring a wide array of events, from the iconic Mardi Gras Parade and Mardi Gras Party to Fair Day and the Mardi Gras Film Festival. These events serve as a testament to the progress we have made in the fight for equality while reminding us of the ongoing struggles to secure and uphold our rights and freedoms.
As we step into 2025, we are faced with both new and ongoing challenges, including increasing opposition to LGBTQIA+ rights worldwide. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we stand firm in our advocacy, support one another, and celebrate our identities with pride. By coming together in solidarity and embracing the values of inclusivity and empowerment, we strengthen our community and ensure that our voices continue to be heard. The spirit of Mardi Gras embodies this unity – reflecting love, acceptance, and the courage to be unapologetically ourselves. Through our collective strength and determination, we will continue to push for a future of equality and justice for all.
At SUPRA, we are proud to represent and support our diverse postgraduate community at the University of Sydney, including our LGBTQIA+ members who contribute so much to our vibrant campus life.
This year, we encourage everyone to embrace the joy and excitement of the festivities. Whether you are marching in the parade, attending community events, or simply showing solidarity, let us come together to celebrate our progress, honour those who paved the way, and reaffirm our commitment to the fight for equality.
May this Mardi Gras be filled with joy, love, and an enduring sense of belonging for all. Enjoy the celebrations, stand proud, and let us continue to push forward together.
Happy Mardi Gras to everyone!
With pride,
Haolong Liao (SUPRA Queer Officer) and Gemma Lucy Smart (SUPRA Disabilities Officer)
