Justice of the Peace

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is a legally recognised witness for statutory declarations, and is able to certify signatures and copied documents. They offer this service for free.

There are a number of JPs available to students at the University’s various campuses. Most ask you to make an appointment beforehand.

Many organisations make JPs available at scheduled times and locations. This may include your local council, Member of Parliament, court, library, chemist, participating post offices, or police station.

Details can be found by searching the JP Public Register. You can also use the Register to search for a JP close to you who is available at other times. You can search by postcode, name of a JP, day of availability, language spoken and JP registration number.

JPs will expect you to have your prepared statutory declaration, the documents to be witnessed and any copies to be certified, as well as your student ID or photo identification with you.
