SUPRA Council – committees

SUPRA has a number of standing committees that regularly meet to provide a forum for focused discussion on particular aspects of the Association.

The standing Executive Committees are:

  • Management Committee
  • Policy Committee.

The standing Working Committees are:

  • Policy Committee
  • Education Committee
  • Publications and Media Committee
  • Community Engagement and Activities Committee
  • Equity Committee.

Committee meetings are convened and chaired by one of the office-bearers and any interested SUPRA members are welcome to participate. We especially appreciate any suggestions or input you may have about matters that impact on your study conditions. If you’d like to attend a committee meeting please contact the chair of that committee.

All SUPRA members have voting rights at meetings of the standing Working Committees. Voting rights at meetings of the Standing Executive Committees (Management Committee and Policy Committee) are reserved for elected members.

It should also be noted that the President, the Secretary, and the chairing office-bearer are ex officio members of these committees, meaning they are members by virtue of their office.

The SUPRA Constitution outlines Terms of Reference for each of the standing committees. Executive Committees have minutes of their meetings recorded and presented to Council; Working Committees have decisions and actions recorded and presented to Council.

Management Committee

The Management Committee is responsible for staffing, administration, finances and infrastructure as well as internal policy and regulations between Council meetings. It ensures the smooth running of SUPRA’s day-to-day and strategic operations. If you have any enquiries about the Management Committee, please contact secretary@supra.usyd.edu.au.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee meets at least once a quarter and is responsible for economic modelling, budget planning and scheduling, quarterly reviews of the budget, and preparation of the draft annual budget. If you have any enquiries about the Finance Committee, please contact treasurer@supra.usyd.edu.au.

Policy Committee

The Policy Committee has the task of analysing postgraduate policy issues and advising SUPRA Council. It reviews and comments on issues arising across the University and oversees campaigns and lobbying on higher education; equity, social, cultural and political issues; and the needs of postgraduate students at the University of Sydney. If you have any enquiries about the work of the Policy Committee, please contact vicepresident@supra.usyd.edu.au.

Education Committee

The Education Committee meets at least once every two months and its main role is to organise and run campaigns that benefit the postgraduate community of the University of Sydney. This has included campaigns for international student travel concessions and against the University of Sydney restructure. Education Committee is chaired by the Education Officer and any University of Sydney postgraduate student can attend meetings. If you would like to join the Education Committee, please contact education@supra.usyd.edu.au.

Publications and Media Committee

Community Engagement and Activities Committee

The Community Engagement and Activities Committee meets at least once every two months and is responsible for planning and running social events for postgraduates. Events have included walks, coffee afternoons, the Postgraduate Ball and end-of-semester parties. The committee is usually chaired by the Vice-President or the Education Officer and any University of Sydney postgraduate student can attend meetings.
